Applications - Cold weather photography

Cold weather photography imageWinter is great for photography, but bad news for batteries. With high drain digital cameras cold batteries can expire in minutes or simply refuse to perform. Personal Comfort have launched a new Thermal patch that removes the risk of missing the perfect shot. All the more frustrating after hours of travel and effort in the cold. The ultra light chemical patches generate direct warmth for 10 hours so covering your full day. Being flexible, you can use their adhesive backing to literally wrap them around batteries, flash guns or other equipment.

The same patches can be used to help keep the photographer warm. With freezing hands its difficult to control a camera and enthusiasm can quickly evaporate. With the adhesive backing position a few against the inside of your coat, jumper or inner jacket and pop another in one of your pockets for your hands. This should be enough to ensure you get that perfect image.

Cold Weather Photography
Winter time can be great for photographs. The suns lower angle provides better, warmer light and it remains near the horizon for longer giving you more time to get that perfect shot. The problem however is that after hours of travel and effort you may find yourself completely thwarted by flat batteries. This is a particular problem with high drain digital cameras in cold weather. For professionals and amateurs alike this can spell disaster.

Effect on battery life
As temperatures drop, battery performance dramatically falls off. Alkaline batteries are the worst performers. Both Lithium and NiMH rechargeable batteries do a bit better. Digital cameras may simply refuse to perform or completely expire after a few minutes. The only solution is to keep the battery warm. While you can rotate them, keeping sets inside pockets, you really need a source of heat to keep them warm without you having to worry about them. Chemical heat patches offer the most effective solution. With their adhesive backing they can be attached or literally wrapped around spare battery sets or equipment. They are extremely light and have a life of 10 hours, so covering your full day.

The other problem to watch out for is condensation. Be careful to not breath on the lens or view finder as any moisture will immediately condense on the glass surface. Once you get back home warm up your equipment slowly in an airtight bag. This will stop condensation forming inside your equipment and causing failure due to rust etc.

Keeping the Photographer warm as well
The same heat patches can be used to keep the photographer warm. With freezing hands you'll find it difficult to control the camera and your creative interest will soon evaporate as the cold invades your body. Before you go out position some heat patches on the inside of your coat, jumper or inner jacket. Use the patches adhesive backing to do this. Once positioned they will stay in place producing a day long gentle heat. This should be enough to ensure you get that perfect photograph. If you are worried about other equipment such as flash guns etc., place a few heat patches with them in your kit bag. Their heating process requires oxygen, so if it is a completely sealed bag, open it occasionally to refresh air inside. Lastly drop one into one of your pockets and swap it around to keep your hands warm.

Problems with film at sub zero temperatures
As a backup you can take along a film camera that can be used without batteries. Watch out for static electricity marks on the negatives. In dry cold weather this can be caused when moving the film through the camera too fast. Avoid using a motor drive and when advancing the film, do it slowly. Film also becomes physically quite brittle at low temperatures. Rewind slowly and steadily and don't force the controls. When rewinding the film, try to warm the camera body under a coat for a few minutes.
